Today is the day . . .
Today is the Day…to Stop the TPP!
The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a bad deal. This trade deal would let corporations—for example, TransCanada or fracking companies—sue local, state, and national governments if climate laws hurt their profits. This could stall progress on climate change.
The TPP was written in secret by corporations; we still don't know what's in it. What we do know from leaked documents is scary: multinational corporations challenging our labor and environmental laws (incuding climate laws), sweetheart deals for pharmaceutical companies, jobs shipped overseas.
Fast track, which would force an up-or-down vote on the TPP with no amendments, was supposed to sail through Congress. But as more people learn about this bad deal, it is losing support. Last Friday, the Senate barely passed fast track with 2 votes to spare. It is expected to have a harder time in the House, where we can stop it. Without fast track, the TPP will not happen.
Focus on the TPP all day Wednesday (or continue through the rest of the week). Fast track could come up in the House next week.
Take action (or several actions) today:
MOST IMPORTANT:
Call your Representative! Tell him/her to Vote NO on Fast Track for the TPP!
Script:
"Hello, I'm calling to urge Congressmember [Bera or Matsui] to oppose fast track for the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The TPP will slow action on the climate, as well as send jobs overseas, depress worker wages, and let multinational corporations challenge environmental protections and Wall Street reform. Support our democracy by voting NO on fast track for the TPP."
