2nd and Capitol

The I-5 Riverfront Reconnection Project, currently underway on O Street by the Crocker Art Museum and at Neasham Circle near One Capitol Mall, will ease vehicular and pedestrian access between the Downtown Core and the Sacramento River.

The project, which began this summer and is expected to be completed ahead of the opening of Golden 1 Center in fall of 2016, creates inviting walkable connections to attractions on the Riverfront. For visitors to Old Sacramento, it will add a major entrance to the historic district at Capitol Mall, where once Second Street dipped under the Mall, the street will rise up and meet the thoroughfare in an intersection right over Interstate 5.

The project also includes widening of sidewalks at Capitol Mall and O Street over the freeway including potted landscaping which will invite more pedestrians over the two bridges.

For the Old Sacramento business community, the Capitol and 2nd intersection will create additional foot and vehicle traffic for the southeast corner of the district activating both office and retail tenancy. The raised roadway is also expected to mitigate noise from I-5 where the freeway goes from aboveground to underground.

In the meantime, the portion of Neasham Circle that is closed for construction had been little used, and access to the two main parking garages for Old Sacramento at the Tower Bridge and I Street have not been impacted.

Further project information is available at cityofsacramento.org.
